History of the Northern Beef Producers Expo

2015 – Technology and Innovation

The inaugural Northern Beef Producers Expo (NBPE) was first held in March 2015 and was organised by a small group of Department of Agriculture and Fisheries extension officers and local Charters Towers beef producers. The one day ‘Technology and Innovation’ themed Expo held at the Charters Towers Showgrounds was a major success in its first year and its potential for establishing as a regular event in the Northern beef industry calendar was realised. The event featured a trade exhibition, live demonstrations and four outstanding keynote speakers. Attendees were excited by the concept and demanded that the organising committee move forward with their ideas to see the event grow.

2016 – Grazing into the future

On the back of the success of the 2015 event, members from the existing committee together with new faces, formed an incorporation called the Northern Beef Producers Inc. The NBP Inc. was established to be a flexible organisation capable of delivering a range of events focused on innovation and development in the Northern beef industry.

The newly formed committee full of fresh ideas and concepts, worked hard to deliver the March 2016, ‘Grazing into the future’ NBPE. The event was delivered over one and a half days, again featuring a growing Trade Exhibition, exceptional keynote speakers and several interactive technology demonstrations. The 2016 event also featured a formal evening ‘Blue Jeans and Bush Belles’ cocktail party with more than 300 guests in attendance.

2017 – The next generation

Following the completion of the 2016 event, the committee received positive feedback from all industry stakeholders whom support the event. Subsequent interest in the event also led to further growth of the NBP Inc. committee. The new committee brought with them new concepts and a strong desire to continue to grow and develop the NBPE initiative into the future.

With the support and enthusiasm from members, new and old, the NBP Inc. saddled up to deliver its third event and for the first time, the 2017 ‘The Next Generation’ NBPE was over two full days!

A full program was established, featuring the largest trade exhibition yet with +80 businesses in attendance, keynote speakers, working dog, ovarian scanning and drone demonstrations and a social night at the Showgrounds where attendees, trades and sponsors could relax and share a drink at the NBP Inc. bar, fondly named “The Trough”.

The event was yet again a major success for the Northern beef industry with more than 1200 patrons walking through the gates of the Charters Towers Showgrounds over the two days. The two-day event cemented it’s spot as a premier event in the Northern beef industry calendar.

The NBP Inc. and it’s members strongly believe in supporting the local community, including not only the immediate Charters Towers region but also the wider Northern Australia beef industry. The organisation has been structured to support charities and other not-for-profit organisations.

The NBP Inc. is made up of a group of dedicated beef producers and beef industry affiliates who all share an interest and passion for advancing the Northern beef industry. The committee members have volunteered their time to see these great events come together.

The concept of the NBPE is still evolving and as an inexperienced committee, the event is a work in progress. However, the ambition of this committee to deliver a premier event for the Northern beef industry has remained consistent since its beginnings in 2015. In it’s seventh year, the ‘team in green’ are extremely proud of the events delivered and are very excited to see what the future holds.
